CAN MY SPOUSE OR PARTNER IN CIVIL UNION BE REQUIRED TO MAINTAIN CAR, HOUSE OR MEDICAL INSURANCE

One of the concerns in a divorce is what happens with insurance.  Can my spouse or partner in Civil Union be required to maintain medical insurance, car insurance, life insurance and so forth?  Basically, in every case, the court is going to look at the medical treatment of children and make sure that if there is medical insurance available, the minor children are covered.  Consequently the parent who has the most economical medical insurance will be required by the court to maintain that insurance for the minor children.  However, the cost of the medical insurance for the minor children is entered into the Child Support Guideline in calculating child support payment so the other parent pays his or her share of the expense of providing medical insurance coverage for the minor children.  With respect to life insurance, if a parent dies social security will pay a large amount each month for support so life insurance can be ordered but it is normally there to cover college expenses for children when the parents are concerned about how that type of education can be obtained.  If a maintenance order is entered by the court the court will enter life insurance orders to ensure that if the person ordered to pay maintenance dies there will be a fund available to cover the maintenance owed.
